Spears' father retains control of star's assets: court

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — A Los Angeles judge on Thursday extended a previous order granting Britney Spears' father broad control of the troubled singer's financial and business affairs.

The Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner ruled Jamie Spears would remain in charge of his daughter's estate until a further hearing on March 10.

Spears was granted conservatorship of the star's assets earlier this month amid renewed fears for the singer's mental health after she was admitted to the psychiatric unit of a Los Angeles hospital.

It was the second mental health scare in less than a month for former child star Spears after she was admitted to hospital in early January.

In that incident, the singer was wheeled out of her home following a stand-off which began when she refused to release her two children to ex-husband Kevin Federline's bodyguard.

Spears' career has appeared to be locked in a downward spiral ever since her split from Federline in 2006.

A judge limited the singer's access to her children in October after she failed to submit to random drug testing as demanded at an earlier hearing where the court ruled she was a "habitual and continuous drug user."

Last year she was repeatedly photographed out partying while wearing no underwear, bizarrely shaved her head at a public salon, and attacked a paparazzi's car with an umbrella before finally entering rehab.

Spears shot to superstardom in late 1998 with her smash-hit debut album "Baby One More Time," which she followed with another chart-topping success the following year, "Oops! ... I Did It Again.
