Troubled pop star Britney Spears is receiving a touch of kindness and sympathy from an unexpected source: the musical theatre community.
Because of the young singer's recent high-profile woes — including losing custody of her two children, allegations of substance abuse and hospitalization for mental evaluation — changes have been made to current productions of the musicals Monty Python's Spamalot and We Will Rock You.
The creative teams behind Spamalot and We Will Rock You removed playful jabs at U.S. pop star Britney Spears from their respective musicals.

A verse from a Spamalot song has been rewritten to delete its reference to Spears "because we don't laugh at sad people," creator and original Python member Eric Idle said in an e-mail on Tuesday.
"[Spamalot director] Mike Nichols requested it and he's right. We changed the lyrics in London, on tour, on Broadway and in Las Vegas. We think that it's now too sad. Britney Spears is being tortured to death and we don't want to be on that side."
Instead, the revamped lyrics poke fun at another familiar tabloid target: Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.
In the musical's song Diva's Lament, the Lady in the Lake complains about her lacklustre career and quips, "I've no Grammy, no rewards/I've no Tony Awards/I'm constantly replaced by Britney Spears/Britney Spears!"
