Seems Britney Spears gave quite the play-by-play analysis Sunday night as she watched the Grammy Awards at her home in Los Angeles. A source who was with her shared these comments from the troubled star during the 3-1/2 hour broadcast:
• Though Spears expressed admiration for Tina Turner's energy-packed duet with Beyonce, she did get snarky about the younger megastar's moves on stage. "She sure knows how to toss her hair," said Britney. "Too bad she can't dance as good as Tina — who's old enough to be her grandmother!"
(Given Spears' own embarrassing performance at the Video Music Awards last fall, I think she'd be more careful before criticizing someone who looked far better dancing and singing than she did!)
• Also given Spears' own struggles with addictions, she seemed less-than-gracious commenting on Amy Winehouse's set via satellite from London. "Look at her! Look how stoned she is! She is so obviously stoned!" sneered Spears. (Again, I have three words for Britney: Video, Music, Awards.)
• On a positive note, along with raving about "how great" Tina Turner was, Spears — like many others — was moved to tears by Chicagoan Kanye West's emotionally-charged tribute to his late mother, Dr. Donda West, as he performed "Hey Mama."
• As for the many tributes to the 50-year history of the Grammys, Spears made an interesting point to her posse. "With the exception of that great opening number with Alicia [Keys] singing to the video of Sinatra,'' Spears felt much of the show was "a mess ... didn't explain to kids why the old stuff was important."
• Spears also made fun of Ringo Starr — "Too bad the least-talented Beatle was the one who showed up. ... They should have got Paul." But she said she'd "kill for" the hat John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono was wearing.
• I'm sure Spears was not alone in criticizing Recording Academy president Neil Portnow — who managed to get his mug into every single shot for the taped piece on the Academy and the soon-to-open Grammy Musuem in Los Angeles.
"Nobody knows who he is ... and they care less," zinged Spears.
